Save Our City – the Battle for Detroit Continues!

MARCH AND RALLY TUESDAY MAY 10TH!
KEEP YOUR SCHOOL & ALL DPS SCHOOLS OPEN!

4:00 pm: GATHER and MARCH from Catherine Ferguson Academy
(2750 Selden 2 blocks north of MLK Blvd. 1 block east of I-96)

5:00 pm: RALLY AND SPEAK OUT at Detroit School Emergency Financial Manager's Office (3011 W. Grand Blvd.)

BING DEMANDS MORE CONCESSIONS!

Mayor Bing is demanding that city unions, and even the pension boards give him more benefit concessions just 6 months after he imposed the worst contract concessions in Detroit city workers' history. While Bing is still working out the details, he is clearly out to radically reduce our pensions and increase our health insurance costs. He is threatening us with a state-imposed financial dictator to void our union contracts if we don't submit to his demands. AFSCME Council 25 is meeting with the City on Friday May 13th to hear Bing's proposals. Council 25 officials are currently saying that they are not in favor of opening the contract to negotiate more concessions (the contract doesn't expire till July 2012). Local 207's response is:

  • Don't Open the Contract!
  • Hands Off Our Pensions!
  • No More Health Insurance Concessions!
  • No Emergency Financial Managers! No Dictatorships!
  • Fight to Save Our City, Our Schools, Our Neighborhoods, Our Jobs!

The fight to defend public education is the cornerstone of our struggle to defend our city, our services and our jobs. These are inseparable issues. If we show the community that city workers are helping to lead the fight for Detroit, we will build the unity needed to defeat the many attack against Detroit. If not, the powers-that-be will destroy our schools, which will further depopulate our neighborhoods, and they will use that as the excuse to eliminate more city jobs, wages and benefits. Stop their racist plan to depopulate Detroit and enforce permanent inequality on our nation's largest black community!

If we raise enough hell, Bing, Snyder and their super-rich, tax-dodging backers will fear the consequences of a takeover of the whole city. Then Bing will have nothing left to threaten city workers with. The rich have no right to treat us like dogs, and we not stand for it! We should come to this rally to help build the new civil rights movement with the power to force the rich to pay enough taxes to rebuild Detroit and other cities. Unite to stop the attacks on our schools and on city workers!
