We Need to Strike to Defend Our Contract!

 

 

 

Local 207, along with the rest of AFSCME and the Coalition of City of Detroit Unions, is fed up with Mayor Kilpatrick’s insulting contract offers. Below are listed several management proposals which show his anti-worker bias. He and his chief negotiator, Roger Cheek have even tried to reverse contract language previously agreed to, and have refused to agree to proposals they themselves submitted earlier in the same negotiating session. We have plenty of reasons to go on strike: the wholesale contracting out of our work is most obvious. Now we must all be ready to defend our jobs and our benefits before they are ruined.

 

At the Local 207 membership meeting, 5 pm, Wednesday, August 14, 2002 we will plan our actions!

Mayor Kilpatrick’s Unacceptable Contract Demands!

• Step increases, which are now automatically given based on length of service, would have to be approved by both your supervisor and department director.

 

• There would be no special wage adjustments. No increase in Shift Premiums.

 

• Health Care/Hospitalization Insurance: Management suggested completely scrapping our current health care plan, with the right to impose another plan if the union didn’t agree to their proposed changes.

 

• All workers who currently get a paid lunch would have to work for an extra half hour.

 

• Workers at seven-day operations would have to call in sick two hours before shift.

 

• No one could work overtime unless you pass a performance evaluation given by your supervisor.

 

• No double-time for seventh day if you’ve used a sick day that week.

 

• Transfers and promotions would be denied if you don’t pass a performance evaluation given by your supervisor.

 

• City wants to end shift and location preference.

 

• Working Out-of-Class would be denied those that the city claims “can’t do the work.”
